How to Use a Word Search Generator

A word search generator takes a list of words, hides each one on a square letter grid, then fills the leftover cells with random letters. Letterfield Press does that work in the browser. You paste a list, choose how the words may travel, press Generate Puzzle, and receive a grid plus a verified answer key. This article walks through that sequence with a ten-word nature list so you can copy the same steps on the generator page.

Enter a word list

Type one word or short phrase per line. The default example is already a nature set: ocean, river, forest, mountain, valley, island, cloud, breeze, meadow, sunrise. You can keep those ten or replace them. The generator accepts ordinary English letters plus spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes. Anything else is rejected with a message that names the unsupported character. Empty lines are skipped.

For placement, each line is converted to an uppercase grid form. Spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes are removed, so a phrase such as ice cream becomes ICECREAM while the word bank still shows Ice Cream. Entries shorter than three letters or longer than eighteen letters after that cleanup cannot be placed. Duplicate grid forms are reported; the tool does not quietly drop the second copy. You need at least three ready words and at most twenty.

Choose a grid size

Available sizes are 10 × 10, 12 × 12, 15 × 15, 18 × 18, and 20 × 20. The default is 15 × 15, which is a comfortable home for ten medium-length words. A word cannot be longer than the grid edge. Mountain is eight letters and fits even a 10 × 10; a classroom phrase that becomes sixteen letters after cleanup needs 18 × 18 or 20 × 20. Larger grids also help when you allow many directions, because short words are more likely to appear by accident in the filler and the generator will retry.

Select difficulty and directions

Easy allows only left to right and top to bottom. Medium adds diagonal down-right and down-left, still without reverse words. Hard opens all eight compass directions, including west, north, and the two upward diagonals. Checking or unchecking Allow diagonal words and Allow backward words by hand switches the label to Custom Difficulty so the page never claims Easy while reverse words are actually on.

Directions change how dense a puzzle feels more than grid size does. Ten nature words on Easy 15 × 15 are straightforward. The same list on Hard is a different search because a word may start at the bottom and run up, or start on the right and run west.

Generate the grid

Generate Puzzle builds a complete arrangement or it fails out loud. The engine sorts words from longest to shortest, enumerates legal paths, prefers some letter overlaps when they match, then fills empty cells. Generate Again uses the same list and settings and asks for a new layout. If placement fails, the previous valid puzzle stays on screen. You will see which word could not be placed when the engine knows it, plus a suggestion to use a larger grid, fewer words, or fewer directions.

Reset Settings restores the 15 × 15 medium defaults and the example nature list. If you have changed the form, the page asks for confirmation first.

A worked nature example

Use this list exactly, one word per line: ocean, river, forest, mountain, valley, island, cloud, breeze, meadow, sunrise. Leave the size at 15 × 15 and difficulty at Medium. Generate Puzzle. You should see ten ready words and a 15 × 15 grid. Forest may share an R with river if those letters line up; that is allowed only when the shared cell is the same letter in both spellings. Show Answers to list each word with a start row, start column, and direction such as EAST or SOUTHEAST. Hide Answers and try to find mountain first, because it is one of the longer strings and makes a useful visual bar across the page.

If you switch to 10 × 10 with the same ten words, generation may still succeed, but it has less slack. If it fails, read the message instead of assuming the list is invalid. Adding a twenty-first line is also reported: only the first twenty ready words are used, and the extra lines are not discarded in silence.

Check the answer key

The answer key is the same grid, not a second puzzle. Each placement records start coordinates, direction, and occupied cells. Interactive play only accepts those recorded paths. If filler letters happen to spell a listed word somewhere else, the generator tries new filler and, if it cannot remove the extra occurrence, it tells you rather than calling the key unambiguous. That behavior is described in more detail in How Word Search Puzzles Are Generated.

Print the result

Open the print station, set a title, keep Include word list checked if solvers should see the bank, and choose US Letter or A4. Print Puzzle sends the worksheet. Print Answer Key sends the marked grid on its own page. Use the browser dialog; Save as PDF is a browser feature, not a file this site hosts.

Fix words that do not fit

When a message names a word, check four things. First, is the grid form longer than the size? Shorten the phrase or raise the size. Second, are too many long words competing on a small Easy grid? Switch to Medium or Hard, or drop a word. Third, did punctuation sneak in? Replace it. Fourth, is the list over twenty entries? Trim it. After you edit, generate again. The custom maker at custom word search shows Original Word, Grid Form, and Status in a table so you can see ICECREAM next to Ice Cream before you print.

When you are ready to print the nature example, keep the title “Nature Word Search,” include the word list, and print the answer key on a second page. If you later click Generate Again, treat that as a new worksheet and reprint both pages. The interactive player can share the latest grid through this browser session only; it is not an account and it is not stored on a server.

Questions

Does Generate Again change the word list?

No. It rebuilds the grid from the current list and direction settings.

Why did my phrase become one block of letters?

Spaces are removed for placement. The readable label in the word list keeps the original wording.

Can I save a list on a server?

No. Lists stay in the browser. A temporary copy may sit in sessionStorage until the tab session ends, as the privacy policy explains.
